​Indian Railways (IR) is the Nation’s transport lifeline and India’s largest transporter connecting, integrating the country and moving men and materials from one place to another. Railways are economical and environmentally friendly mode of transport. To keep the engine of the lifeline running, IR has Workshops, the places where full-fledged maintenance is carried out on the rolling stock viz. locomotives, coaches and wagons.

Vijayawada Division is plying 572 trains every day which includes 288 passenger trains carrying 2.5 Lakh passengers per day by utilizing its fleet of 205 Electric & Diesel locomotives approx. over a route of 1053 Km. To achieve effective running of its fleet, the Division has over the years  created  large  infrastructure  and  a  good management system to ensure that it is fully utilizing all the  resources  at  its  disposal  viz.,  human  resources, workshops, sheds, Carriage & Wagon depots, etc. on a 24 x 7 x 365  basis and  has focused on efficiency, operation and safety. The fleet of locomotives, coaches and freight wagons are given periodical preventive maintenance in order to keep them in good fettle and avoid failures/break down in service.    

C&W (Carriage and Wagon) Depot at Kakinada Port Railway Station was inaugurated in 1966 with primary maintenance of Gudur Passenger and Circar Express. C&W Depot, Kakinada takes care of primary maintenance of originating trains from Kakinada Port and Kakinada Town. It also serves the terminating maintenance of Circar Express and two passenger services connecting Kakinada and Vijayawada. The C&W depot not only deals with the primary maintenance but also with the Intermediate Over Hauling (IOH) of Coaching trains periodically every 9 months and examination of sick freight wagons. C&W Depot ensures safe and smooth journey for the passengers by giving top priority to safety & cleanliness. During festival seasons, Primary maintenance, watering & Linen distribution for Special trains plying from Kakinada towards various destinations is also taken care at the Depot.    

Salient features of C&W Depot, Kakinada Port:

  • Total holding 334 Coaches
  • Primary maintenance of 16 Rakes (9 Trains) at an average of 82 coaches per day
  • Primary maintenance of many trains which originates from Kakinada like12737 Gowthami Express, 17210 Sheshadri Express, 17250 Kakinada-Renigunta Express, 17204 Kakinada-Bhavnagar Express (Weekly-Thu), 17206 Kakinada-Sainagar Shirdi Express (Mon, Wed & Sat) & 12775 Cocanada AC Special (Tue, Thu & Sun) and 17221 LTT Express (Wed & Sat)
  • Primary maintenance of Special trains like 02775/76 Kakinada-Lingampalli-Kakinada Express (Mon, Wed & Fri) and 07245/46 Kakinada-Raichur-Kakinada Express (Fri & Sun)
  • Terminal Maintenance of 60 Coaches per day, viz., Train no.17644 Kakinada-Chennai Egmore Circar Express and two passenger trains 67243/44 & 67241/42.

Additional functions of C&W Depot, Kakinada Port:

  • Examination of Freight Trains, Empty Rakes and Sick Wagons.
  • Maintenance of In-motion Weigh-Bridge at New Portland.
  • Monitoring of Mechanized Cleaning contract, On-Board Housekeeping Staff, Pest & Rodent control in coaches.
  • Mechanized washing of Linen, Distribution of Linen at an average of 5.8 tons/day for 32 AC Coaches/day from BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) Laundry.
  • Maintenance of Bio-Toilets.
  • Giving top priority to safety and welfare, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is supplied to all the staff. Hospital facility for all Railway staff & family members are available at Railway Health Unit, Samalkot.

The workshops on Vijayawada Division are  being dynamically upgraded and modernized by providing latest technological inputs in order to reduce human intervention in maintenance and  to  improve  the  efficiency  of  the  process  and reliability of the rolling stock.

  • Issuing of online Brake Power Certificate for coaching as well as freight trains in Coach Maintenance Management and Freight Maintenance Management modules
  • Implementation of e-office as part of Digital India towards achieving paperless office
  • Submitting of non-stock indents through IREPS (e-procurement system) by using digital signatures
  • Availability of all coaching data on cloud platform for easy usage
  • 100% coaches fitted with Bio-Toilets.
