Inaugurated in:1934 (loco round house in 1908 and shed in 1934)
Turntable was used for reversing of steam engines (Change the direction) at one of the biggest junction in Southern India, at that time.

During it's heyday, 2500 employees used to work in this shed to repair steam engines..
The shed was active till the arrival of Electric locomotives(1982) and was dismantled in 2011.

Anecdote: Bitragunta was an important landmark for railways and it was one of the biggest locomotive sheds in Indian railways till steam engines were replaced by diesel and electrical locomotives. The loco shed was constructed in 1885 and the roundhouse with turntable facility was added in 1934.The shed had capacity to handle 50 steam locomotives with major yard and an inter-changing depot for drivers and guards. It is still an inter-changing depot for guards and drivers manning goods and passenger trains.

Bye - pass at Vijayawada (Revised alignment – 26.00 KM): 
Review of work has been done by Operating department and alignment has been changed  with two Rail Over Rail (ROR) from Mustabada to Rayanapadu.  

Modified revised estimate for Proposed Bye-pass line with Rail - Over - Rail (ROR) flyovers at ends between Mustabada & Rayanapadu Stations (bye-passing Vijayawada Junction) connecting BZA-VSKP line & BZA-KZJ line for a value   of CRs.497.60 sanctioned by Railway Board.

Land acquisition requisitions submitted to District Collector/Krishna to an extent of  38.414 Acres submitted and joint measurements completed.

Preparation of tender schedule for yards is in progress.

Regupalem, Elamanchali & Narsingapalli - Extension of Loop Lines

• Detailed estimate sanctioned for Rs.26.45 Cr on 29.11.13
• 2.10 acres of land acquired in March 2018

• ESP approved in 2013. Major alteration with Sand humps also approved in Aug 18.
• SIP approved. Work involves  4 cabins. S&T Cables 180 KM required.

• Engineering: Building 1st floor (RBG rooms) completed. Minor bridges 4 out of 4 completed. Balance earth work about 18000 Cum is in progress. 
• Acquisition of 0.445 Acres of land has been taken over from Revenue Authorities on 30-11-2019.
• S&T:  Tender awarded and works are in progress.
• OHE:  Tenders finalized.
